Conferences

The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine is committed to investing in and creating learning opportunities that promote clinical excellence and effective, compassionate, and safe patient care. To that end, the department supports educational activities for physicians, CRNAs, and other health care team members that:

  • Promote the interchange of ideas and information
  • Foster a culture of transparency and patient safety
  • Optimize clinical education
  • Improve clinical decision making
  • Engage all stakeholders in the strategies to optimize patient care

The department offers learning and mentoring opportunities both within the department and in collaboration with other departments. Furthermore, the department collaborates with Harvard Medical School's Department of Continuing Education and Boston Children's Hospital's Continuing Education Department to offer various nationally and internationally renowned conferences and educational programs aimed at increasing attendees' knowledge, skills, and professional performance.

Principles of Pediatric Anesthesia and Critical Care

This course provides a comprehensive, up-to-date, and current review of the most important changes and advances relevant to the practice of pediatric anesthesia and critical care. The program includes a variety of evidence-based lectures, with question-and-answer sessions, and interactive problem-based learning discussions. New this year, the in-person program will include full afternoons of pediatric regional anesthesia and point-of-care ultrasound workshops designed to enhance your practice.

Returning this year, the interactive, hands-on Pediatric Patient Blood Management (pPBM) masterclass will review current evidence-based guidelines for pPBM management, including best-practice guidelines for multimodal strategies to manage the bleeding child: anemia management, benefits and risks of blood transfusion, coagulation factors and blood product alternatives, massive hemorrhage guidelines, point of care testing (viscoelastic testing), and basic blood banking for the pediatric anesthesiologist. Applications are open for this pre-conference offering.

Pediatric Pain Medicine: State of the Art and Science Virtual Conference

Designed for physicians, nurses, psychologists, physical therapists and other clinical staff who care for children with pain conditions. The conference will be focused on the delivery of up to date Pain Management for children in the era of the opioid crisis. The aim will be to integrate basic, translational and clinical science with clinical practice updates.

Pediatric MOCA® training

Boston Children’s Hospital Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine and Boston Children’s Hospital Immersive Design Systems are proud to offer one-day Pediatric Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®) Simulation courses in crisis management devoted specifically to pediatric anesthesia. This course is a one-day simulation experience providing credit towards fulfillment of Part IV — Practice Performance Assessment and Improvement (PPAI) — in the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) MOCA program. By attending a MOCA Simulation Course at an ASA-Endorsed Simulation Center (i.e. Boston Children’s Hospital), you can earn 25 MOCA part IV (QI) points for attending the course and completing the online follow-up activities. Board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists and general anesthesia practitioners have the opportunity to manage a wide variety of pediatric anesthesia cases, concentrating not only on the clinical management, but also on improving their communication skills and team work. The courses are in situ — they take place in an actual operating room and PACU setting at Boston Children’s Hospital, as well as the state-of-the art Simulation Center.
