Professional History
Caleb P. Nelson, MD, MPH, is board-certified in urology with a certification in pediatric urology. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract problems, vesicoureteral reflux, hydronephrosis, and kidney stones.
He attended the Duke University School of Medicine, receiving his MD in 1997. He completed a urology residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center, one of the top urology programs in the country. During this time, he also completed the Michigan Urology Clinical Research Training Program and received a master's of public health degree from the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
After developing an interest in pediatric urology, he completed a two-year pediatric urology fellowship under Dr. John Gearhart at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. In 2006 he began his current position in the Department of Urology at Boston Children’s Hospital, and as an Assistant Professor of Surgery (Urology) and Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Nelson’s research focuses on clinical and epidemiological research in critical areas of pediatric urology, and quality of care in pediatric surgery and medicine. He was a co-principal investigator (PI) of the National Institutes of Health-funded RIVUR study, a landmark clinical trial for treatment of vesicoureteral reflux. He has published ore than 100 papers in the urology literature, and is also an Assistant Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Urology, as well as a member of the Editorial Board of the Pediatric Section of the Journal of Urology. He also serves as the Director of Safety and Quality for the Department of Urology.
Approach to Care
Coming to work is rewarding because we have the best team, the best facilities, and the best colleagues anywhere in the world, and this allows us to provide best urological care anywhere to our patients. I believe that attention to detail is essential, whether I am doing a surgical procedure, sending a note to a pediatrician about a patient of theirs that I have seen, or explaining a child’s urological condition to a family. Each and every patient deserves my absolute undivided attention, and while I am taking care of that patient, nothing else takes priority.
