Dr. Borer is a pediatric urologist and urologic surgeon with a specialized interest in the care of patients with complex urologic problems. He also specializes in major reconstructive surgery using standard and minimally invasive techniques. Most of his time is devoted to delivering specialized clinical care to patients, and teaching residents and fellows. The remaining time is spent on advancing the field through research, and creating and overseeing new models of care. His recent work has involved development of the Bladder Exstrophy Program, which has allowed him to publish significant outcomes data on many aspects of care of these complex children.
In his positions as the first incumbent Reconstructive Urologic Surgery Chair and the Director of the Bladder Exstrophy Program, Co-Director of the Robotics Program, and the Director of Neurourology and Urodynamics, he is uniquely positioned to continue the efforts of current and future optimization of care for infants, children and young adults with complex genitourinary anomalies.
Dr. Borer presents his work nationally with colleagues at the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Urology, American Urological Society, and the Society for Pediatric Urology and internationally at the European Society for Pediatric Urology and recent Bladder Exstrophy Workshop in Casablanca, Morocco. He and his team have published meaningful findings on evaluation, management and psychosocial aspects of care for these children extending from prenatal diagnosis into adulthood.
In addition to clinical and teaching responsibilities, Dr. Borer is participating in several ongoing basic and translational research projects including the characterization of mouse models to dissect the molecular basis of lower urinary tract morphogenesis during development. Dr. Borer is also Co-PI on a project involving genetic analysis of patients with epispadias, bladder exstrophy, cloacal exstrophy and cloacal malformation using state-of-the-art genome sequencing approaches.
