Professional History
Leonard Rappaport MD, MS is Chief of the Division of Developmental Medicine. He is a Senior Associate in Medicine at Children's Hospital and Mary Deming Scott Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He has directed the Fellowships in General Pediatrics and Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics for 30 years involved in the training of well over 100 fellows in DB Pediatrics and General Pediatrics and is Principal Investigator on one of nine federally funded training programs in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. In research, Dr Rappaport is a member of a multidisciplinary group examining the effects of cardiac surgery on neurodevelopmental outcomes through a series of randomized clinical trials. Dr Rappaport is also a member of a multidisciplinary research group in autism spectrum disorders and on the Steering Committee of the Autism Consortium of Boston. Dr Rappaport has also had a research and teaching interest in other Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics areas such as encopresis, enuresis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and recurrent pain in childhood. Dr Rappaport had a small primary care pediatrics practice outside at Longwood Pediatrics for 27 years which he left in January, 2009 when he became division chief.
Approach to Care
Dr Rappaport's training and experience has prepared him in a round about way for his current roles. He completed his undergraduate degree in economics at the University of Pennsylvania and the London School of Economics. He then received a Masters in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and began to teach in an alternative high school that was a joint effort of the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Public Schools. He taught for four years, and for the final two years was Head Teacher (Principal) at the school. He subsequently went back to school to take science courses and attended Yale Medical School. He completed a residency and a fellowship in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital, Boston. He has worked to establish the new Division of Developmental Medicine and the Developmental Medicine Center over his 35 year long career at Boston Children's Hospital.
Dr. Rappaport is committed to the highest quality of care guided by the most recent research available to guide his medical opinions. He is committed to family centered care and involving families in the complex decisions surrounding the care of children with neurodevelopmental issues.
